One of your members received a link to pay for their membership online β but the payment never came through, and it's showing as "Payment initiated." What does that mean, and how do you fix it? This article has the answers.
Checking the "payment initiated" status
You launched a Membership Campaign with sign-ups subject to approval. From the "Pending Memberships" tab of your campaign, you approved a sign-up from someone who chose to pay online by credit card. A payment link was then sent to them to complete their membership payment.
In the "Sign-up Status" field, select "Payment link sent (awaiting payment)".
Approved requests that are awaiting payment are displayed here. There are two possible statuses: "No payment" and "Payment initiated."
Click the eye icon (Details) to view the payment status on the transaction itself. If you see the message "This sale was abandoned," it means the payment did not go through. More details are provided later in this article.
Reasons for a "payment initiated" status
There are several possible reasons why a sign-up may show a "Payment initiated" status during a credit card payment.
1. The payment is still processing
The person is in the process of completing the payment, but the confirmation is taking time to reach the platform. In such cases, the transaction shows a payment initiated status and appears temporarily in the Members to approve tab.
If the payment goes through successfully, the person will disappear from the Members to approve tab and appear in the Members list. No action is required on your end.
2. The payment attempt failed
This status may appear if the person started the payment but didn't complete it β for example, if the 3D Secure verification was not completed successfully.
In these cases, the transaction will display the message "This sale was abandoned." It won't be possible to resend the payment link to retry the payment: the person will need to go through the membership request process again so that a new payment link can be sent to them.
The failed transaction will disappear from the Members to approve list after some time.
You can still find it on the person's profile under Community > Contacts, in the Purchases tab, with the status "Payment error" and the error reason "3D Secure authentication was not completed, or was not completed successfully."
To avoid losing information on approved members who are still awaiting payment, you can export the list using the export icon.
